The idea for this service project turned registered 501(c)3 charity AND hand dyed yarn business began to take shape during the winter of 2016 in Newport, Rhode Island where founder, Mary Langdon, was spending the winter and where she got involved doing charity work supporting Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. Mary’s exposure to these families combined with her experience in the fiber community prompted her to use her own passion for knitting to bring a little comfort to moms whose children were battling cancer and she brought this idea back to New Jersey where Hugs through Shrugs officially started.
Although Hugs through Shrugs is based in New Jersey, donations are shipped nationwide through collaborations with many other charities supporting families whose lives have been forever changed by pediatric cancer.
As the need for their donations grew, the need for funding grew as well. and with the help of her sister, Cathy Cummings, a small batch , hand dyed Newport themed yarn project began.
Newport Yarn & fibers is the sole source of fundraising for Hugs through Shrugs, with 100% of the profits directly funding their mission” wrapping love and support around moms whose children are battling cancer.
Their love for this wonderful city is reflected in their Newport themed yarn and shawl collection, where the stories of strong women from the past are helping to support some very brave moms today.
